Correctional Facility Hosts Educational Fair

Inmates at Montgomery County Correctional Facility participated in its first-ever educational fair on Wednesday, allowing them to see the many options available once released.

Participating vendors included the University of Maryland University College, the Literacy Council of Montgomery County, the Aesthetics Institute of Cosmetology, and many other colleges, GED programs, and trade schools.

The facility, which is located in Boyds, has both male and female inmates as well as juveniles. The jail, which can hold up to 1028 inmates, serves those sentenced to 18 months or less and those awaiting trial.

Warden Robert Green explained that at any moment, over 90 percent of the inmates would be going back into the community, and the facility wants to help make that transition, from incarceration to release, smooth and successful.

“This helps them understand, engage and digest what is available for their reentry,” Green said of the fair, explaining that education helps promote life-long learning, which is something to help keep the released inmates out of jail.
