The facility follows the Auburn system with large rectangular buildings and a stringent external security perimeter. The institution also contains a minimum-security satellite prison camp for male inmates. The cells where offenders live are in a rectangular housing unit. They are situated back-to-back in the middle of the building, enabling guards to easily patrol the perimeter. Inmates are housed in one- and two-person cells. Numerous walls, fences, and other security systems combine to support security functions. Prisoners incarcerated at Leavenworth must pursue academic and vocational goals, maintain prison employment, and attend life skills enrichment programs.
