Background: CI Great Plains is a contracted correctional institution, operated by private prison corporation The GEO Group, Inc. The facility opened in 1991 as the state’s first private prison. The facility achieved initial accreditation through the American Correctional Association (ACA) in 2017.
Housing: Inmates are housed in dormitory style housing.
Health Services: CI Great Plains provides inmates with routine and emergency dental and health care. Inmates can obtain emergency health care 24 hours a day by approaching any staff member and requesting assistance. In order to obtain routine care, inmates must submit a sick call form and wait to be scheduled for an appointment.
Psychology Services: CI Great Plains provides inmates with an intake interview, substance abuse counseling, life skills, and employment assistance. Typical treatment groups include stress management, anger management, and others. Crisis intervention is available 24 hours a day.
Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP): CI Great Plains does not house a Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). However Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are offered.
Education Services: CI Great Plains offers GED, English-as-a-Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses to the inmate population. Inmates without a GED or high school diploma are required to attend courses. High school diplomas and post-secondary programs are available through paid correspondence programs.
Advanced Occupational Education: CI Great Plains offers academic programs in smart board technology, customized learning through individual education plans, dynamic grouping, and technology-based learning.
Vocational Training: CI Great Plains offers vocational training in Custodial Maintenance, Barbering, Horticulture, Electrical, Building Trades, Auto Mechanics, Upholstery, Weaving, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Small Engine Repair, Masonry, Plumbing, Culinary Arts, Computer Repair, Carpentry, and Welding.
Apprenticeship: CI Great Plains does not offer any apprenticeship programs to inmates.
Library Services: Inmates have access to a law library, leisure library, general interest library, and religious services. In the leisure library inmates can check out fiction and nonfiction books, newspapers, and magazines. In the law library inmates can conduct legal research and prepare legal filings.
UNICOR: CI Great Plains does not house UNICOR facilities.
Commissary: Inmates can shop once per week at the institution’s Commissary. Items such as food, drinks, hygiene products, and electronics can be purchased.
Recreation Services: CI Great Plains offers indoor and outdoor recreation opportunities. These include arts and crafts, physical fitness, sports, board and card games, and more.
