Adams County Detention Facility Prison Services Information

Background

Adams County Detention Facility is owned and operated by CoreCivic under contract with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons. CoreCivic is formerly known as the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA).

CoreCivic has owned the prison since 2007, but the facility did not open until late 2009. Note that this facility is different from the Adams County Jail.

The facility has a capacity of 2,540 inmates. However, the Bureau of Prisons contract’s rated capacity is 2,380 inmates. The prison receives approximately 35 to 40 inmates twice a week.

Most CI Adams County prisoners are illegal immigrants charged with re-entering the United States after deportation. These inmates are primarily serving sentences of 60 months or less imprisonment. Most detainees have pending detainers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The majority of prisoners are originally from Central and South America.

Inmate Housing

Adams County Detention Facility Inmates live in units divided into three pods with bunks. There are a total of seven housing units. Correctional officers supervise housing unit operations.

Healthcare

Adams County Prison has a medical unit employing physicians, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and medical assistants. These staff members provide routine check-ups, manage sick calls, and address non-emergency needs. Private correctional healthcare facilities typically include a dental clinic as well. Emergency medical care is available 24 hours a day.

Psychology Treatment Offerings

Inmates are screened upon arrival at Adams County Detention Center. They are referred to a psychologist, psychiatrist, or mental health specialist for follow-up evaluation and intervention if necessary.

Inmates who experience mental health problems have treatment options. Whether these issues are from emotional conflict or mental health illness, prison staff members can help. A team of qualified mental health professionals can assist them with their needs. Inmates also have access to medications, therapeutic community activities, and group and individual counseling.

CoreCivic staff members receive training in identifying mental health crises. They refer inmates to the professional staff whenever they suspect a CI Adams County inmate is experiencing a problem. Staff monitor inmates for signs of declining mental health and suicide risk. They work actively to assist troubled inmates in their time of need.

Commissary

Inmates have regular access to the commissary service to support their health and wellness. Adams County Correctional Center inmates can purchase beverages, light meals, snacks, over-the-counter medications, and stationery. Clothing, personal hygiene products, religious items, and other items are also available.

Various sports and activities are available to CI Adams County inmates. These include basketball, board games, creative writing, knitting, and more.

Visitation Information for Adams County Detention Center

Family members and friends can visit inmates on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Visitation days and times vary by gender and security levels.

Additionally, all visitors must present a valid government-issued identification card. Adams County Detention Center accepts state and federal identification cards. Passports and Resident Alien Cards are also acceptable forms of identification.

Visitation Regulations

While visitation is conducted in person, inmates in the Adams County Correctional Facility’s Special Housing Unit are restricted to authorized non-contact visits. All visits are limited to one-and-a-half hours. Visitors are required to arrive 30 minutes before the beginning of the scheduled visitation time.

Adams County Detention Center imposes numerous inmate visitor dress code restrictions.

  • Shirts may not be low-cut or revealing.
  • No tank tops or halter tops.
  • Clothes may not be see-through, extremely tight, or reveal the midriff area.
  • No sleeveless or strapless dresses.
  • No swimsuits.
  • Bandanas, camouflage, military clothing, and clothing that resembles security uniforms are not allowed.
  • Gang, obscene, and distracting messages, shapes, and designs are not permitted.
  • No coats, jackets, hooded shirts, raincoats, or other outer garments.
  • Only religiously-recognized hats and headgear are permitted.
  • No sunglasses, jewelry, or watches.
  • Stilettos and heels are not allowed.

The following visitation restrictions are also imposed:

  • Car keys must be stored in an assigned locker in the front lobby area.
  • Undergarments must be worn at all times.
  • Skirts and dresses can not be more than two inches above the knee.
  • Shoes must be worn.
  • Thongs, slippers, and open-toed shoes are not permitted.
  • Visitors may bring in up to $20. These can be in $5, $1, and quarter increments.

Adams County Prison in the News

Adams County Correctional Center inmates rioted in 2012. The inmates’ primary complaints were inadequate food, medical conditions, and disrespectful staff members. As a result, prisoners Carlos Albert Delagado-Castaneda and Jesus Beltran-Rodriguez were charged and convicted in federal court.

Delagado-Castaneda was sentenced to 92 months imprisonment. Beltran-Rodriguez was sentenced to 240 months of imprisonment. The prisoners were also ordered to pay over $1.3 million in restitution.
