Background: FCI Petersburg Medium was opened in 2002. It is part of the Petersburg Federal Correctional Complex (FCC). The institution is a Sex Offender Management Program (SOMP) prison. As such, around 40 percent of the compound is incarcerated for sexual offenses. The facility has begun to house transgender male-to-female prisoners who have been moved there from other BOP facilities. This enables their protection and allows for enhanced management of this vulnerable population. Notable inmates include Jewish Rabbi David A. Kaye (released in 2016 after serving 6 years for illicit sexual conduct) and former Mayor of Newark, NJ, Sharpe James (released in 2010 after serving 18 months for fraud).

Housing: Inmates are housed in two, three, and four-person cells.

Health Services: FCI Petersburg offers sick call, medications, medical emergencies, dental call, routine dental care, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and physical examinations to inmates. For routine health care, inmates must attend sick call, which is held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 8:30am. For emergency dental care, inmates must attend dental sick call, which is held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 6:30 am.

Psychology Services: All inmates are screened by a psychologist during the institution’s admission and orientation program. Crisis counseling, coping skills, suicide prevention, mental health counseling, and spiritual counseling are all available to inmates. FCI Petersburg Medium also offers the Non-Residential Sex Offender Treatment Program (SOTP-NR).

Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP): FCI Petersburg Medium houses a Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). A Non-Residential Drug Abuse Program (NR-DAP) and a Drug Education Class are also offered.

Education Services: FCI Petersburg Medium provides literacy, and GED, English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) programs. Adult Continuing Education (ACE) classes and a parenting program are also available. High school diplomas and post-secondary programs are available through paid correspondence programs

Advanced Occupational Education: FCI Petersburg Medium does not offer any advanced occupational education programs.

Vocational Training: FCI Petersburg Medium offers vocational training in AutoCAD and Carpentry.

Apprenticeship: FCI Petersburg Medium offers apprenticeships in HVAC, Landscape, and Plumbing.

Library Services: A general library includes a variety of magazines, newspapers, reference materials, and fiction and nonfiction books necessary for meeting inmates’ educational, cultural, and leisure needs. An Inter-Library Loan Program is available in conjunction with the Appomattox Regional Library. Inmates are able to prepare legal documents and have reasonable access to legal materials via TRULINCS the Electronic Law Library (LexisNexis). Additionally, the law library contains required legal publications, general legal reference materials, and a selection of Bureau of Prisons policies. Inmates have access to typewriters and a copy machine.

UNICOR: FCI Petersburg Medium houses a UNICOR facility that receives, sorts, and repackages clothes hangers for private vendors.

Commissary: Inmates may use funds in their account to purchase items at the institution commissary, place funds on their inmate phone account, purchase TRU-Units for their TRULINCS account, or send funds in another manner. It is the responsibility of the inmate to know the amount of money available in his account. Items such as ice cream, snacks, food, candy, clothing, shoes, and electronics in the commissary are available for purchase.

Recreation: FCI Petersburg Medium’s recreation facilities include a gymnasium, athletic fields, a handball & racquetball court, a volleyball court, soccer field, a tennis court, a bocce ball court, softball field, and a walking track area. The facility also offers organized intramural leagues throughout the calendar year including soccer, volleyball, softball, basketball, frisbee, and flag football. The hobby craft programs include drawing, painting, leather craft kits, crochet, and cross stitch.
