Background: FCI Bennettsville is a medium security prison located in Marlboro County, South Carolina. In addition to the main unit, FCI Bennettsville operates a minimum security satellite camp located next to the facility.  The camp is located on the right hand side of the main institution and contains the warehouse, facility maintenance, and a mechanics garage. Notable inmate Dawud Abdullah Khalid escaped from FCI Bennettsville in 2012 (sentenced to five years for attempting to escape).

Housing: Inmates are housed in three large 500 bed housing units. Each of these dormitories contains four levels and four pods. The camp contains dormitory housing for up to 150 inmates.

Health Services: Shortly after arrival all inmates at FCI Bennettsville receive an initial medical screening. Health services for all inmates include medical and dental sick call, medications, eyeglasses, and routine physical examinations. Inmates are assigned to a specific health care provider who treats them for the duration of their stay. FCI Bennettsville and camp inmates can complete an Inmate Request to Staff Member form (cop-out) for routine appointments. Emergency care is available 24 hours a day.

Psychology Services: FCI Bennettsville provides intake screening, crisis intervention, and individual and group counseling for all inmates. The intake interview gathers information to assess the inmate’s current psychological functioning. Regular group counseling services include anger management, and criminal thinking.

Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP): FCI Bennettsville does not offer a Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP), but inmates may be transferred to other institutions that offer RDAP. A Drug Education Class, the Non-Residential Drug Abuse Program (NR-DAP), Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), are offered.

Education Services: FCI Bennettsville offers literacy, GED instruction in English and Spanish languages and the English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) program. Classes are separated into Advanced GED, GED, pre-GED, and Special Learning Needs levels. Adult Continuing Education (ACE) classes and a parenting program are also available. Inmates can also complete high school diplomas and post-secondary programs through paid correspondence courses.

Advanced Occupational Education: FCI Bennettsville offers a Welding advanced occupational education program. Microsoft 2010 is also offered at the prison. The camp does not offer any advanced occupational education programs.

Vocational Training: FCI Bennettsville offers vocational training programs, which are approved by the Automotive Service Excellence, National Construction Center for Education and Research (NCCER), Green Clean Institute, and the National Restaurant Association. Course offerings include: Automotive Service, Electrical Technology, Green Technology (NCCER), HVAC, Mechanical Maintenance and Systems, Construction and Extraction, NCCER Core, and Welding. The NCCER Core class is offered in English and Spanish. The camp offers Welding.

Apprenticeship: FCI Bennettsville does not currently offer any apprenticeship programs.

Library Services: The main library at FCI Bennettsville is located in Education Department, and the auxiliary library is located in the Recreation Leisure Center. The library at the camp is located in the camp education area. Fiction and nonfiction books, newspapers, and magazines can be checked out. The law libraries primarily consist of the TRULINCS Electronic Law Library.

UNICOR: The FCI Bennettsville UNICOR facility handles fleet management and vehicular components. The satellite camp does not house a UNICOR facility.

Commissary: Inmates are permitted to spend up to $90 per week for regular and special purchases on their assigned shopping day. Stamps and phone time are excluded from this spending limitation. Commissary deposits made through outside sources must include the inmates committed name and inmate number. Deposits can include money brought at time of arrival, sent from outside sources, or earned from work assignments. Requests for Withdrawal of Inmate’s Personal Funds are processed within one (1) week of receipt by the Financial Management Department. Inmates are responsible for keeping track of balances and knowing the amount of money available in their commissary account. Balances can be checked via the automated inquiry machine (AIM) next to the Barber Shop or through the Inmate Telephone System.

Recreation Services: Recreation at FCI Bennettsville offers an outdoor recreation yard and an indoor recreation leisure center. Exercise activities included basketball, flag football, softball, soccer, racquetball/handball, walking/running track, bocce ball, horseshoe pits, and workout equipment. Other leisure and social activities include ceramics, art, crochet, board games, playing cards, Dominoes, chess, checkers, and Scrabble. A music program is also available and consists of established inmate bands, self-taught practice sessions, and instructional books. The musical equipment includes drums, congas, electric guitars, amplifiers, speakers, brass instruments, microphones, and cords.
